The Hop Sh Bam Connection is a Belgium-based swing band, founded in 2011, that has been keeping dance floors moving for over 15 years. Emerging as one of the early Belgian bands of the modern swing revival, the group has remained a constant and active presence within the swing scene ever since.
In Belgium, the band has built strong and long-standing ties with the major swing scenes in Ghent, Brussels and Antwerp, and regularly performs at festivals, jazz clubs and dance events.
Internationally, The Hop Sh Bam Connection has appeared on stages and dance floors across Europe, including Paris, Lille, Metz, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Rouen, Orléans, Barcelona, Madrid, Costa Brava, Gran Canaria, Porto, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Groningen, Breda, Luxembourg, Berlin, Munich, Freiburg, Münster, Kraków, Poznań, Winterthur, Glarus, Göteborg,
Copenhagen, Helsinki and Edinburgh.
The band specializes in authentic swing music from the 1920s to the 1950s, inspired by the legendary ballrooms of the 1930s. Their repertoire blends elegant swing-era standards, joyful big-band classics and energetic New Orleans– and Charleston-inspired tunes — always with the dancers in mind.
The name “The Hop Sh Bam Connection” reflects the very essence of the band. Hop” refers to the Lindy Hop, the dance form at the heart of the swing culture. “Bam” expresses the burst of energy, joy and positive drive that radiates from this music and dance. “Connection” highlights the essential bond — between the musicians themselves, but also between musicians and dancers, dancers and musicians. Altogether, the name functions like a joyful onomatopoeia of swing: Oh-bop-sh-bam, a-kool-ya-hoo! — an invitation to move, swing and groove.
The Hop Sh Bam Connection performs in a variety of formations — quintet, sextet and septet, as well as the extended Hop Sh Bam Deluxe — allowing the band to adapt naturally to different venues, dance floors and events while maintaining a strong swing feel and a clear musical identity.
Led by trumpeter and vocalist Marie-Anne Standaert, who is also an experienced swing dancer and big band leader, and one of the rare female bandleaders on the European swing scene, the band places great emphasis on live interaction with the dance floor. Setlists are shaped in the moment, responding to the energy, flow and atmosphere of the dancers.
The Hop Sh Bam Connection stands for joyful swing, infectious energy and deep respect for the pure art of swing music —
wonderful to listen to, irresistible to dance to.
